MBTI vs Big Five
Typewell · Updated September 1, 2026
The internet likes MBTI versus Big Five because it sounds like science versus astrology. The useful version is calmer. They answer different questions. Four-letter type, in the Jungian tradition Myers and Briggs popularized, is a preference sketch: where you like to point your attention, and how you like to decide. The Big Five, often called OCEAN, comes out of research on words people use and on factor analysis. Five sliders that show up in a lot of data. This site has Type Compass and Five Traits because people show up with both questions. A 32-item compass isn't a laboratory. Five bars don't make you a type.
What four letters are good for
A type page is a story with actual scenes in it: daily life, work, love, a common mistake, a neighbor type. INFJ (Counsel) and INTJ (Blueprint) share a long pattern and split on whether people or systems come first. A bar chart doesn't give you that contrast easily. Letters are also a way to say 'I need the door shut' without a lecture. The costs are real. They box a slider. People turn them into identity. They get sold as destiny and as hiring tools. This site refuses both. Type Compass isn't the official MBTI® test. Ties break toward the quieter poles so a dead heat doesn't fake certainty.
What five bars are good for
Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism. You leave with 0–100 scores and a plain band. High conscientiousness, on a normal day, is a packed bag and a form you sent. Low extraversion is a bill a loud room charges. Neuroticism here is how fast you recover, not a diagnosis. Bars are better if you want to watch change at the edges, or if four-letter folklore bounces off you. They're worse as a story you tell at dinner. Nobody memorizes '62 Agreeableness' the way they memorize INFP. That's useful if you wanted less identity. It's annoying if you wanted a page with a name.
Where they overlap
Extraversion in both maps is about social energy, though the Big Five version is broader: assertiveness, positive mood, not only parties. Judging and Perceiving often move with Conscientiousness. People who flip J and P on retakes often sit in the middle of that bar. Feeling and Thinking aren't the same as Agreeableness. A high-Agreeableness thinker exists. A low-Agreeableness feeler exists. Openness touches Intuition and isn't the same thing. Neuroticism has no letter, which is why four-letter internet talk invents 'loops' to smuggle mood back in. If you want both pictures, take both quizzes. Use letters for the story. Use bars for the volume. Don't trust a chart that says INFJ equals high N. That chart is fan fiction.
Which should you take?
If you want a long page and a name, Type Compass. If you want something closer to how personality researchers talk, Five Traits. For a career, conditions from a type page plus Conscientiousness and Neuroticism from the bars beat either one alone. For a roommate, Extraversion and Agreeableness will save more dishes than a myth about INFJs. If a boss wants to test you, neither of these is a hiring tool. The disclaimer says so. Short scales are noisier than long ones. Look at the actual week after the result: did you send the form, did the room cost you, did a new idea eat dinner.
Where this site stands
Both maps are here. There's no purity war on this page. The Big Five has a stronger claim as a scientific model. Four-letter type has a stronger claim as a readable story. People use both. The copy is written so neither one is the same paragraph with adjectives swapped. For a four-way comparison that also includes Enneagram and DISC, see Compare. For scoring, see Methodology. Then take a quiz or don't. The dishes don't care which camp you joined.
Questions
- Is the Big Five more accurate than MBTI?
- As a research model, the Big Five has stronger evidence as five broad traits. As a story you can use on a Wednesday, four letters are often more usable. They're different tools. Short tests of either are sketches.
- Can I convert MBTI to Big Five?
- Not cleanly. Extraversion overlaps. J and P often move with Conscientiousness. The rest is a loose overlap, not a translation table. Take both.
- Why does this site offer both?
- People show up with both questions: a name, and a bar. Two honest sketches beat one map pretending to do every job.
- Is MBTI pseudoscience?
- The official instrument has critics, and type-as-destiny is folklore. Preference pairs are still a usable vocabulary. Type Compass doesn't claim to be a lab instrument. The pages are still worth reading.
For thinking about yourself. Not a diagnosis. Not the official MBTI test.
