How to work with each DISC style
Typewell · Updated September 1, 2026
How to work with each DISC style is a standup problem. Leave Sunday out of it. DISC is a workplace communication model. Work Pulse sketches four poles: D Drive, I Signal, S Steady, C Craft. It isn't certified DiSC®, not a hiring tool, and not a personality religion. Use it to write a better Slack message. The how-to-work notes on each style page are the same ones repeated here, so a manager can send one link. If you don't know your pole, take the six-minute quiz as a guest. If you do, skip to the person who is currently annoying you. They're often doing the thing your pole skips.
Drive (D)
Start with the decision you need, not the history of the project. Bring options and a recommendation. Keep updates short, dated, and owned. An update with no name on it is fog. Challenge the idea in the room. Save notes about their personality for later, in private. If you need time, say when you'll come back with an answer. Silence reads as stalling. Drive's useful part is speed to a call. Drive's cost is the bruise in the hallway. A twenty-second check-in is cheaper than a week of quiet resentment. Don't bury the point. Don't make them guess the ask.
Signal (I)
Let them talk the idea into shape, then write it down before the room dissolves. Give public credit when they move a room. Don't dump a ten-page spec as the first move. Walk it, then send it. Put follow-ups on a shared list so the enthusiasm has a spine. If you need a no, say it warmly and early. A slow no feels personal. Signal's useful part is a message that travels. Signal's cost is a trail of almosts. One finished thing, named in public, beats four dazzling kickoffs.
Steady (S)
Warn them before a plan changes. Even a day's notice changes the day. Ask for their view after they have had time, not in a pop-up ambush. Don't reward a yes by piling on more. Ask what they need taken off. Thank them for a specific thing: the sequence they kept, the person they calmed. Ask for the disagreement out loud. 'Tell me what would make this fail' is useful. Steady's useful part is a room people can stand. Steady's cost is a delayed no. A short early refusal is kinder than a late freeze. Stop surprising them for sport.
Craft (C)
Give them the data and the definition of done before you ask for a gut call. Build in review time. A surprise deadline reads as disrespect. Ask for the two issues that would change the recommendation, not a full autopsy. Don't take precision as a personal attack. Answer the question in the document. When you need speed, write down what 'good enough' means. Craft's useful part is the error that didn't ship. Craft's cost is quality used as a hiding place. Rank the nits. Spend the intensity where being wrong is expensive.
Pairings in a real week
Drive and Signal launch and forget the ops manual. Drive and Steady can roll over the person holding the place together. Drive and Craft treat quality as delay until someone writes what good-enough means. Signal and Steady soothe and never pick. Signal and Craft is jazz versus a ruler. Steady and Craft may never ship. Name the pairing in standup without turning anyone into a mascot. Secondary styles matter. A Craft with Drive second writes differently from a Craft with Signal second. Work Pulse reports both. Use the notes, then go back to the work. DISC is a sketch of how you push, persuade, steady, and specify. It isn't who you're on Sunday with a lock on the table.
Questions
- What are the DISC names on this site?
- D Drive, I Signal, S Steady, C Craft. They line up with Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness in the workplace model. The labels are local. The pattern is the usual one.
- How do I work with a high D?
- Lead with the decision, bring a recommendation, date the update, and don't bury the ask. Challenge the idea, not the person.
- Is this certified DiSC®?
- No. Work Pulse is a sketch on this site. It's for looking at yourself, not for hiring, promotion, or clinical use.
- What if I score as two styles?
- Most people do. Primary plus secondary is the flavor. Read both how-to-work lists. The pairing is the story.
