Enneagram type 6 — Ally

Typewell · Updated September 1, 2026

Type 6 is the Ally. You watch for risk, you test people, you show up hard for the ones you trust, and you want a base that won't vanish. Popular type system, not a diagnosis.

The usual name is Loyalist. Here it's Ally, because the pattern is a search for a person, a team, or a system that will still be there if the floor moves. The fear, in the usual teaching, is having no support. If Drive Map put you here, you already run two movies at once: the plan, and the plan for when the plan fails. That isn't cowardice. Some people love the future by trying to see the hole in it.

Daily life includes a lot of inner debate. You test authorities and then miss them when they're gone. You want the worst case named so it has less power. You can be the bravest person in a real emergency and the most stuck person in a vague email. In the teaching, some 6s move toward the fear and some step back. Both are 6. The gift is loyalty that doesn't quit at the first snag. The cost is a mind that won't clock out until every door is checked.

At work you do well in operations, security, project risk, nursing, law, union work, aviation, anywhere someone has to keep faith with a system and still question it. You need a boss who doesn't punish questions, and a plan B that's written down. Handing every decision to a guru, a partner, or the group chat is a trap. Make one small call with no poll. Scanning can eat the afternoon. Set a time to stop, then walk.

In a relationship you stay, and you scan. The other person wants the staying without the pop quiz. Name the fear as a fear. Don't hand it to them as their failure. A repeated ritual, the same check-in, the same night, does more than a speech about loyalty. When you want to test someone, ask for the thing you actually need. They can't pass an exam they can't see.

Wings: 6w5 looks more withdrawn and analytical. 6w7 looks more outgoing and more pulled by appetite. In the usual teaching, stress pushes 6s toward Type 3 (sudden doing, image) and security toward Type 9 (checked-out peace). People say Type 6s are just anxious. Anxiety can be in the picture, but 6 is a story about support and vigilance. Plenty of 6s are steady in a crisis. A quiz isn't an anxiety disorder. If the week is unlivable, get care. This site isn't a clinic.

If this fits, make one small decision today without polling the group chat. Thank someone specifically for being reliable. They may not know they're your base. The Enneagram is a popular type system, not a science claim. Read Type 5 if the issue is depletion more than support. Read Type 1 if the issue is a standard more than a base. Then write the worst case, the likely case, and the next action. Close the doc. The doors have been checked enough for one night.

Core fear

Being without backup. Caught alone when the thing happens.
