Enneagram type 2 — Neighbor
Typewell · Updated September 1, 2026
Type 2 is the Neighbor. You like being needed, you're genuinely warm, and you're bad at saying what you need. The Enneagram is a popular type system, not a diagnosis.
The usual name is Helper. On this site Type 2 is Neighbor, because what you do is move toward people. You anticipate. You become the extra pair of hands. The Enneagram, as people usually teach it, says the fear is being unneeded and the wish is to be loved. Drive Map is a short quiz, not a long typing interview and not a diagnosis. If you landed here, you have been praised for care your whole life. You may not know what you want when nobody is in trouble.
From the outside it looks generous. You remember the allergy, the ride, the form. You text after the appointment. You pull up the extra chair. Under that there's often a tally you won't admit to: a hope that the warmth comes back. When it doesn't, the sweetness gets sharp. The swing comes from a need that never got a plain sentence.
At work you become the person who actually knows how the humans run. Support, nursing, teaching, community work, account management, people ops. Places that run on relationships will promote you and then use you up. Write a job description that includes your own time. If the company only likes you when you're available, that's them taking your labor and calling it culture. A Neighbor with a boundary is still a Neighbor.
In a relationship the good part is that you notice what they need. The bad part is a contract they never signed. If they didn't agree to owe you, they can't pay you. Ask for what you want in words, not in a mood after the third favor. Let someone take care of you in a way you don't get to manage. Receiving without immediately doing something back will feel lazy. It's how you find out whether they want you or the help.
Wings change it. 2w1 looks more principled and a bit reserved about the 'right' way to help. 2w3 looks more polished and aware of how it plays in public. In the usual teaching, a bad stretch pushes 2s toward Type 8 (suddenly blunt, done being nice) and an easier one toward Type 4 (raw, convinced your feelings are the point). Plenty of 2s are sincerely warm. The ugly version is help with a hook. The useful version is a need you can say in one sentence.
If two types both feel true, read both pages. 2 and 9, 2 and 3, 2 and 6 get mixed up a lot. A short quiz is a sketch. What to try: notice the need, then ask. Give something, then let someone give back. Keep a night that's only yours. If this page fits the kitchen, use it. If it doesn't, you can still be useful without making 'needed' your job title.
Core fear

Questions
- What's Enneagram Type 2?
- Neighbor is the name used here for Type 2. The motive is to be needed and loved. The warmth is real. The blind spot is asking directly. Popular type system, not a diagnosis.
- Why do Type 2s get resentful if they like helping?
- The help often hides a deal the other person never agreed to. The resentment is the unpaid bill for a need you didn't say.
- What's the difference between 2w1 and 2w3?
- 2w1 often looks more principled and reserved. 2w3 looks more polished and aimed at results. Both still orbit relationships.
- Can Type 2s be introverted?
- Yes. This system is about motive, not how loud you're at a party. A quiet 2 still organizes around being needed. They may do it one person at a time.
For thinking about yourself. Not a diagnosis. Not the official MBTI test.
